I live in Boston and MANY people are getting Frenchies. Though they are cute as hell, there are many things you must take in consideration prior to getting one. As with most “pure breds” there are chances of health problems. From what I understand, FB can over heat REALLY quickly and die, yet love to wrestle and run around. The one who is friends with my dog gets wet at the doggie park shower before, during and after playing, she is also black and in the sun that does make a huge difference. Also, they don’t give birth, they have to have c-sections because their heads are too big to come out of the mom naturally. And, being a “bull-dog”, they tend to be stubborn, sometimes aggressive, and love to use their little mouths to clamp down on things and not let go, all characteristics of “bull dogs”. This may sound like I am not sold on the FBs, but that is not the case. I had a lab for almost 13 years, the love of my life, and we all know what they are “supposed” to be like. Since the time I had her and during, I noticed, not her, but many very aggressive Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers, assuming this is from over breeding. One good thing about a smaller dog is, if they do get into a little tussle, they can easily be picked up and taken away, bigger dogs are not so easy to separate in this case. So my suggestion, even though I still feel guilty about getting my Lab from a breeder, I believe it was the best decision i could have made and I “made -up” for this by getting a kitten from a shelter, a Green Iguana who needed a home and a Chihuahua who needed a home. There are also pure-bred rescues, but I was spend alot of time with either of those ideas, best to know someone who has already used the “service” because you really cant trust rating or comments on line about anything as important as another life that will be with you for atleast, hopefully a solid 10 years. So good luck with the search and I hope what I offer has helped in some way. 🙂
I traveled on a show circuit with a Frenchie breeder, and I helped her show them. They are very, very sensitive to temperature. If it was over about 75 degrees, we carried water bottles to mist their bellies. They can’t breathe well when they get too hot. If you get one, be sure to buy from a breeder who does lots of genetic testing on their brood stock. Don’t get one that is listed in the newspaper or on Craigslist and is available to the first person with the cash. A good breeder will make sure this is the right breed for you before they sell. Frenchies are predisposed to elbow, eye, hip and skin problems, so make sure you get a health guarantee.
The two above mentioned important things to keep in mind. I want to emphasize, if you decide to go with a breeder, make sure it is a REPUTABLE one (search the AKC website). There are many websites that advertise purebred frenchies when they might not be (instead are from puppy mills). Also beware of BROKERS.
Absolutely precious! I especially love the picture with the toy. My dachshund does the same thing. He loves squeaky toys, carries his newest one with him everywhere, and rips it apart until he gets the squeaker.
I can’t speak for a whole breed but mine is a bit rough when she plays, perhaps because she thinks she’s a boxer (have two of those in my house as well)?!
i love finding blogs that honour the adorable smooshy-faced loves of our lives! i blog about my smooshy faced puggle’s adventures! she saved my life from 11 years of bulimia. at the age of 29, i’m just now beginning to live a full experience. to thank gwendolyn for saving me, i give her a new experience each and everyday of her life. yesterday, she donated food to animal friends. check it out, and i hope you smile at her photographs. your little ones are ADORABLE, and they certainly made me smile. http://wp.me/p1BQPc-uD
Your blog warmed my heart! It’s amazing what dogs (or any animals) can do for us, and it makes me so happy to know others appreciate them too. I could write pages on what Lily’s done for me. I just try and give her the best possible life in return, like you. All the best! -Iz
