A New Skill
Day Four: Is there a skill related to your hobby that you hope to learn one day?
I would loooooove to learn fair isle knitting. I did a small fair isle project before (snowflake doggie sweater), but I’m not counting it since it wasn’t done properly.
The first colorwork project I saw that made me realize my limited knitting abilities? Eunny’s Endpaper Mitts! The ones above are made by mikomiao.
The project that is so amazingly awesome I wouldn’t mind displaying in my house? The matryoshka pillow made from this pattern.
The project I hope to one day have the patience and discipline for? This wheel sweater from Vogue Knitting’s Holiday 09 issue. I always thought the pattern was of lemons, but many people are referring to them as wheels… The idea of a “lemon sweater” seems so much cuter!
Can anyone recommend a good book for fair isle knitting? Or written tutorial with pictures? I prefer to not use videos…
Happy Thursday!

The pillow is truly a piece of art. And I love that Vogue sweater. I have that issue and I kind of want to knit it but I also hate working fair isle. Now that you have pointed out that the motif looks like lemons, I really want to knit it in green and yellow.
Yep, lemons. I love those Endpaper Mitts.
Fair Isle made it on my list of skills too.
They look like lemons to me 🙂
I’ve seen a lot of people recommend Alice Starmore’s Book of Fairisle Knitting. It’s the one I want to get.
I cannot recommend Alice Starmore’s book more highly. I reviewed it on my blog a while ago (http://www.knit-a-while.com/?p=682). There really is a reason it’s a classic in the area.
Though there are a few patterns, the idea is to help you become comfortable with the technique. There is an extensive “pattern dictionary,” so you can design your own item. The patterns are of various sizes, so if you just want to add a Fair Isle touch to a cuff, neckline, etc., you can do so with ease.
Thank you so much for the recommendation! After looking at some other reviews it does seem unrivaled 🙂
Lemon Sweater, that sounds great! Good luck with Fair isle – it’s really fun.
I love the Endpaper Mitts! There are so many fantastic color combinations you can do.
Fair-isle was on my list too, and I love those mittens!
Fair Isle is so much on my list that I didn’t even want to write about it. I took a class on two-color knitting, so technically I know how to do it, but I’ve never actually taken the plunge on a project. Love those mitts….
