Tattoo Tuesday

February 20, 2012

I’ve finally come to terms with showing my tattoos on the internet. I even volunteered for a Tattoo Tuesday post on Danielle’s blog! Click over to see the interview and photos. Read on if you want to know why I was hesitant.

I used to crop my tattoos out, cover them with the izznit tag, or use Lily as a shield in photos because:

1. I don’t want them copied. Why someone would want the same tattoo as a stranger is beyond me but it happens, I’ve seen it, and it sucks. Mine don’t have a special meaning but they were drawn for me by my tattoo artist.

2. I don’t want my pictures showing up on those image websites (weheartit, tumblr, pinterest). Apparently, tattoos make a person way cooler and attract the picture stealers of the world. They  just get reblogged over and over and over sans credit until some twat takes the photo and puts “GPOY” underneath. I’ve seen my pictures altered and used in strangers’ eBay listings, blog banners, websites, whatever. I was even shown a fake izznit blog where this chick was pretending to be me. THAT’S WEIRD, GUYS. It’s the deception part that bothers me most, not necessarily the credit thing (which shouldn’t even be a “thing”).

3. I don’t want my appearance to affect the way one of my creations is seen. Like I said above in point two, people seem to think tattoos make a person (and therefore everything they do or make) cooler . I’ve been told I make knitting/sewing/crochet/whatever cool. Really! I don’t. If you like what I make,  awesome. I just hope it’s for reasons other than my appearance like technique, yarn choice, mods…the list goes on.

But the thing is, I have a lot of them. With summer coming I can’t be cropping my arms and legs out of photos. It’s also not fair to my tattoo artist (Eric Jones of Palehorse Tattoo). He’s awesome and the world needs to know that.

This post started off as a one liner but one thought lead to another and I ended up with this.

Happy Tuesday, friends.

Okay, I’m officially head over heels. : ) Hah, and your artist is INCREDIBLE. But I think you already know that.

all of your tattoos are amazing, you should DEFINITELY show them off. I imagine getting your armpit tattooed was intense!

It was but not as bad as I thought it’d be. I wouldn’t recommend it for a first tattoo, that’s for sure ;)

First and foremost – I just recently started following your blog and I’m completely impressed. Second thing, I full-heartily respect your decision with being hesitant about showing off your tattoos via the internet. I am a huge fan of tattoos and I must say, yours are beautiful!

Thank you, I really appreciate that :)

I think your reasons are valid, but I’m glad you shared because your tattoos are really well done.

Thanks! I’m actually a bit relieved now that most of them are out there.

Your work is gorgeous and I LOVE your blog. You’re right, the internet has a strange fascination with tattoos– on Etsy, a seller with tattoos can sell much more stuff than someone without because buyers are drawn to pics of them! I’m glad you shared yours though, I think it’s important to let people know that you’re not your tattoos, they’re just a part of you. :) (When I started reading, I didn’t even know you had them, haha! I came for your cute pup and your great knitting!) Great post!

I only have one tattoo at the moment (for now) but I totally get you being hesitant to show your tattoos online. I felt the same for a while (still feel, actually) but my tattoo artist posted it on his website so I was kinda just like “well… it’s out there.” so y’know… whatever. plus, like you said, summer will come and i will be in tops and t-shirts and the world will see it anyway. If some jackass decides to copy it… it’s their problem. As long as I don’t see it, because I’d be pretty pissed off if I found out, tbh.

I wouldn’t want to know either!

Beautiful work. You’ve made great choices– the themes & colors & styles all work well together & create an overall style. I have to admit it was your day 1 Month of Craft Photos shot with your knitting sitting in your lap & your legs showing that really drew me to your blog– but I follow for the knitting (& other craft content), not just the cool tats! :)

Great post. Very thoughtful. The photos are awesome as well. And your artist is, indeed, quite talented.

I actually saw your post first on Sometimes Sweet and now I’m following your blog! I’ve actually been tattooed by Eric! What a coincidence!!! I was kind of feeling the same way about letting there be pics of my tattoos, but now after reading this… You’re right, he is the bomb and his awesomeness does deserve to be out there!

    • February 27, 2012 5:33 pm

A coincidence indeed! Hopefully he remembers to thank his loyal customers when he becomes internet-famous ;)

well thanks for sharing because your tats are orgasmic. (and this isn’t the first time i’ve told you). if anything, it makes me want to get tattoos from your artist!

    • February 27, 2012 6:01 pm

Do it! He travels to the east coast every now and then.

i feel weird about posting mine too. i recently found my foot tattoo on tumblr with a ton of shares, and I had only ever posted it on my friends only live journal. made me feel really weird.
but that being said, i love that big cat in your armpit!! LOVE IT.

    • February 27, 2012 5:36 pm

Having my photos spread on tumblr used to weird me out too but the online impersonator raised the weirdness bar. Thanks!

  13. February 26, 2012 5:37 pm

wha? #2 creeped me out…people do that?!

well, your tattoos are stunning. & you are too. thanks so much for letting us all see them. :) & love the feature you did.

    • February 27, 2012 5:37 pm

Apparently! Surprised no one has claimed Lily as their own yet.

      Thanks Ana :)
